General Questions

What is drifting?

Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner. It's both a motorsport and an art form that requires skill, practice, and a properly set up vehicle.

Who is Air Capital Drift?

Air Capital Drift is Wichita and central Kansas' grassroots drift community. Founded in 2020, we organize drift events, driver development programs, and community activities for drift enthusiasts of all skill levels. Our mission is to provide safe, accessible opportunities for drivers to develop their skills and build a supportive community.

Do I need experience to participate?

No, we welcome drivers of all skill levels, including complete beginners. Our events include dedicated sessions for beginners with instruction and guidance from experienced drivers. We recommend starting with our beginner-focused events if you're new to drifting.

How much does it cost to participate?

Event Day Questions

What time should I arrive?

Gates typically open at 7:00 AM for participants. We recommend arriving at least one hour before the drivers' meeting (usually at 8:30 AM) to complete registration, technical inspection, and set up your pit area. Driving sessions usually begin around 9:00 AM.

What should I bring to an event?

Essential items include:

  • Your vehicle (properly prepared for drifting)
  • Helmet (DOT or Snell approved)
  • Extra tires (at least 2-4 depending on your skill level and car setup)
  • Basic tools for tire changes and minor repairs
  • Plenty of water and snacks
  • Sunscreen and weather-appropriate clothing
  • Folding chair and possibly a canopy for shade
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Valid driver's license and registration confirmation

Is there food available at events?

Most events have food vendors on site, but availability can vary. We recommend bringing your own food and drinks as a backup. Water is essential, especially during summer events.

Can I bring spectators/friends?

Yes, spectators are welcome at our events. There is typically a spectator fee of $10-$15 per person. Premium members receive one free spectator pass per event. All spectators must sign a waiver upon entry and follow safety guidelines.

What happens if it rains?

Our events typically run rain or shine, as drifting is still possible (and sometimes more fun) in wet conditions. However, in cases of severe weather (lightning, heavy storms, etc.), we may delay or cancel portions of the event for safety reasons. We will communicate any schedule changes via email and our social media channels.

Rules & Technical Questions

What kind of car do I need for drifting?

For drifting, you need a rear-wheel drive vehicle. Popular choices include Nissan 240SX/Silvia, Mazda Miata/MX-5, BMW 3-Series, Toyota AE86/Corolla, and Ford Mustang. The car should be in good mechanical condition with functioning brakes, no fluid leaks, and secure components.

What modifications are required for drifting?

While you can start drifting with a stock rear-wheel drive car, these modifications will greatly improve your experience:

  • Welded or limited-slip differential
  • Coilover suspension or lowering springs
  • Bucket seats with proper harnesses
  • Hydraulic handbrake
  • Steering angle modifications
  • Upgraded cooling system

For beginners, we recommend starting with a differential modification and basic suspension upgrades before investing in more extensive modifications.

Do I need a roll cage?

Roll cages are required for convertibles (no exceptions). For hardtop vehicles, roll cages are recommended but not required for our grassroots events. However, if you plan to compete in more formal competitions in the future, you may eventually need a roll cage.

What safety gear do I need?

Required safety equipment includes:

  • DOT or Snell approved helmet
  • Long sleeves and pants (natural fibers recommended)
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Fire extinguisher mounted within reach of the driver

Recommended additional safety gear:

  • Racing gloves
  • Racing harness (properly mounted)
  • Racing seat
  • Neck support/HANS device
  • Fire-resistant clothing

How many tires should I bring?

For beginners, 2-4 extra tires (beyond what's on your car) is usually sufficient for a full day event. More experienced drivers or those with higher horsepower vehicles may go through 6-8 tires in a day. It's always better to bring more tires than you think you'll need. We typically have tire vendors at our events, but selection and pricing may vary.
